Lent has begun and offers a tremendous opportunity to step back from distractions and seek the Lord.  In the forty days leading up to Easter Christians all over the world commit to making personal sacrifices.  There is much discussion and internet posting about what is ‘given up for Lent.’  I would like to propose a slightly different approach to your Lenten journey.

While looking through some discounted Valentine’s Day decorations at a local store, I found a beautiful slate heart with a soft pattern of roses and the word love boldly placed in the center.

There were a few flaws on the heart but I was sure it could be restored.  I took it to the salesclerk to ask for an additional discount.  She spoke into her headpiece to her supervisor, “I have a woman holding a heart of stone that is chipped.  She would like a discount.”  I Read the rest

A Lenten Reflection

This week will see a flurry of retail activity to try to make Valentine’s Day a memorable one for those we love.  To really be unforgettable to our loved ones is to be in the spirit of a generous heart all year long.  Having a generous heart means walking in love.  “Love…bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.  Love never fails.”  (1 Corinthians 13:7-8a)   Read that a few times.  Notice the word all.  This means despite the words spoken or the circumstances that do not go exactly as we would script them.  … Read the rest
